Window Cleaning Kit
An often overlooked part of home maintenance is keeping windows clean and crystal clear. It’s easy to keep them in good condition but to get the very best from them and to ensure that they stay in very good condition for a number of years a window cleaning kit can be used. Skyscrapers are perhaps one of the largest buildings around on the planet and they are literally covered in windows. Most of the exterior of skyscrapers is generally finished with glass. How do they keep so many windows so clean? There are two primary ways; the first is by using self-cleaning glass, the second is with a lot of hard work. Manual cleaning of windows on skyscrapers is generally done via free hanging exterior lifts and some good old fashioned elbow grease by determined individuals who have a good head for heights.
The traditional window cleaning kit generally consists of a bucket, sponge, shammy cloth, water and a little detergent. Of course, ladders may be required if some windows are situated in an elevated location. There are more specialised tools available to make the whole process of window cleaning a little easier such as squeegies. These are used to achieve a high finish on a window surface which is smear, smudge and streak free. Some window cleaning kits even come with a telescopic pole which is used to reach areas which are hard to get to. A telescopic pole practically negates the need for ladders of any kind.
The water solution used for cleaning windows is something that can vary quite a lot. It is often made up of a light detergent which is mixed in with some water but can be made up of a vinegar solution. It is a tried and test old wives tale that using a light vinegar and water solution with newspaper for wiping leaves glass surfaces looking crystal clear with no marks of any kind. Using vinegar and water is an extremely cheap alternative to using a generic detergent but the smell of vinegar can be a noticeable caveat. This shouldn’t present too much of a problem though as the smell usually wears away very quickly.
Although keeping windows clean is a very straight-forward task, there are a couple of things to look out for as windows can be slowly ruined over time by using things to clean them which just aren’t suitable. Abrasive materials can slowly wear down the smooth finish of windows over time with scratch marks and scuffs, eventually making replacement windows a necessity. This is why using a soft shammy cloth is really important, windows are very expensive (typically upvc double glazing style windows) and so they should be looked after with great care.
Perhaps the best finish you can give to some freshly washed and dried windows is to use a little glass cleaning solution on them. This is a slightly alcoholic solution which evaporates very quickly leaving no marks as it dries. This is a guaranteed way to get perfect shiny windows every time they are cleaned. It is quite similar to the vinegar method and produces the same results.
